Spotlight: Sephora's Sun Safety Kit
In 2006, Sephora partnered with the Skin Cancer Foundation to help bring awareness to skin cancer and promote proper sun protection. The result was their Sun Safety Kit. Now, almost a decade later, the Sun Safety Kit is one of Sephora's hottest summer must-haves.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, more people have skin cancer than any other cancer combined. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their life, and in the United States alone, nearly 5 million people are treated every year for skin cancer. Fortunately, with the right tools and education, skin cancer can be prevented.
One of the most obvious things you can do to protect yourself is to use sunscreen. I'm not saying you have to lather yourself in Coppertone SPF 70 every day, but even your computer screen emits UV rays! Adding a moisturizer to your daily routine with an SPF 15 or higher will not only protect you from damaging sun rays, but it will also help with some of those aging concerns.
This year's Sun Safety Kit has some great lightweight moisturizers for any occasion. I love the Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 30. It's an awesome lightweight moisturizer that provides great protection for oily to combination skin. It's also good for folks like me who suffer from acne. If you plan on spending some quality time in the water but are obsessed with what you put on your face (I will not put aerosol sunscreen on my face because it breaks me out so bad), try Shiseido's Wetforce Ultimate Sun Protection Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ For Face. It's got broad spectrum protection and is water resistant. I will warn you that Shiseido sunscreen tends to leave an ashy tint and I don't recommend it for the darker skintones.
My lips aren't really my top priority... ever, so I often neflect them. Lips are some of the softest, thinnest tissue on your face though and need protection just like the rest of you. Well, Sephora's got your back, which is why they included a stick of Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment with SPF 15.
Protecting yourself from the sun is just one of the compontents to skin cancer prevention. You want to avoid over tanning and stay away from tanning beds. And you definitely don't want to burn. I agree with that last statement, but just quick sidebar--I had friends back in high school who used to swear the best tan was the one that was left behind after your entired body had become a glowing ember, burned to a crisp and then peeled off. Anyway... if you want that, my-burn-just-peeled-off-and-now-I'm-a-bronze-godess tan, Sephora's also got you covered.
Included in the kit is St. Tropez One Night Only Wash Off Face & Body Lotion. St. Tropez gives one of the best at-home fake tans you can get. This lotion gives you a streak free (get the mitt!) tan for the night. Also, it doesn't have that stank that you usually associate with fake tans, so how can you lose?
One of the best things about the kit is that is has a variety of products to sample so you can keep what you love and gift what you don't! Two of my of my must-haves from this year's kit are Korres Yoghurt Nourishing Fluid Veil Broad Spectrum SPF 30 and Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare™ Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen. I use Korres for my night time cleanser. Although I don't use their Yoghurt line at the moment, I did enjoy the moisturizer in the past and am excited to try this one.
Sephora's partnership with the Skin Cancer Foundation has been very successful. The proceeds from the kits supports skin cancer awareness. According to Perry Robbins, president and founder of the Skin Cancer Foundation, the kit has raised more than $3.7 million dollars to help fight skin cancer. Now, in it's 9th season, the kit is one of Sephora's best selling at only $32 and is expected to sell out.
No matter what your reason for trying out the Sun Safety Kit this year, you won't regret it. Grab yours at Sephora and SiJCP while they last!
